RTÉ & IBI to Launch New Irish Radioplayer App

RTÉ and the Independent Broadcasters of Ireland (IBI) are seeking expressions of interest for a commercial partner to monetise a national mobile radioplayer app. This is a major development in the Irish media landscape with significant potential to attract revenue from the mobile market.

RTÉ and the Independent Broadcasters of Ireland are to launch a new mobile radioplayer app that will allow users to listen to the commercial radio stations from within the one app.

The new radioplayer app will be modelled closely on the successful UK Radioplayer which is backed by the likes of the BBC, Bauer, RadioCentre and Global Radio and it will be developed by Radioplayer Worldwide, which develops similar apps for international markets.

In the run up to the launch of the new app, RTÉ and IBI are also looking to appoint a digital sales partner to help them commercialise the app through advertising and sponsorship. Applicants should have a “considerable experience and success in digital media sales, a solid presence in the Irish media buying community, a proven track record of innovation and leadership in the commercial landscape and an understanding of media markets, established and new.”

According to JP Coakley, director of operations for RTÉ Radio, “the motive for the new player is to position Irish Radio in a digital ecology. We need to be together, offering a single gateway for the listeners and users. With every station in the country, this app will be a superb offering which our listenership shows has great promise at home and worldwide.
