Paul Galvin for Dunnes Stores – Tattooed Man

An average Irishman, a clothing collection and an extraordinary story.

This is Paul Galvin’s seventh design collaboration with Dunnes Stores. Paul approaches design in a unique way by drawing inspiration from interesting stories or aspects of history that inform the design.

This latest brand film by Chemistry for his spring/summer collection, Tattooed Man, intertwines the pieces from the collection with the inspiration behind it, by telling the fascinating story of a Tattooed Irishman named James O’Connell.

Using a combination of live action and animation, the film follows the narrative of the Irish sailor who brought tattoos to the Western World in 1829. After finding himself shipwrecked on an island and tattooed from head to toe by locals, he eventually found himself in PT Barnum’s Freak Show in America where the public marvelled at his Irish jigs and were introduced, for the first time, to tattoos as we know them today.
